Whats Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy is the professional application of yoga principles and practices to promote health and well-being. This is achieved through a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management, and customized yoga practices for individuals or small groups. The therapy aims to alleviate, reduce, or manage symptoms, improve functionality, prevent illness recurrence, and enhance overall well-being. Yoga therapy also helps clients change their relationship to their condition, fostering increased self-awareness and supporting a consistent yoga practice. It requires specialized training to effectively support the client-therapist relationship and produce positive outcomes. Yoga therapy continues to evolve, incorporating contemporary health sciences, and its efficacy is supported by a growing body of research.
The key tools used in yoga therapy include:
-
Physical postures and movements
-
Breathing exercises
-
Meditation and relaxation techniques
What does yoga therapy treat or manage?
Yoga therapy can help address a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional needs. Some of the key benefits include:
-
Alleviating physical discomfort and improving pain management
-
Supporting neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), fibromyalgia, epilepsy, and recovery after stroke
-
Easing joint pain and inflammation associated with arthritis
-
Reducing tension, stress, and relieving headaches
-
Assisting in weight management and promoting healthy weight loss
-
Enhancing mood and providing relief from symptoms of depression
-
Mitigating anxiety and stress
-
Easing symptoms associated with menopause
-
Supporting emotional balance and providing calm for those with trauma
Yoga therapy is also beneficial for individuals who may not have specific concerns but are looking for a personalized practice that enhances overall well-being, promotes balance, and fosters a deeper connection to mind and body.
What happens during a yoga therapy session?
A typical yoga therapy session begins with a check-in to assess your current physical, mental, and emotional state. This helps me understand your specific needs and goals for the session. Based on this, I will guide you through a series of movements and exercises aimed at improving strength, flexibility, and balance, tailored to enhance your physical function and support your overall well-being.
The session may be conducted while seated in a chair, standing with the chair for support, or a combination of both, depending on your abilities and preferences. Throughout the session, I will lead you through breathing techniques designed to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and manage pain effectively.
The session will conclude with a relaxation practice to help you achieve both mental and physical calm. We may also discuss "homework" or specific practices to incorporate into your daily routine, supporting your continued progress and helping you stay engaged with your healing process. Each session is personalized to meet your unique needs, providing a therapeutic and holistic experience.
How often should I do yoga therapy?
The frequency and duration of yoga therapy sessions will be determined in collaboration with me and healthcare provider. The number of sessions and their length will depend on your goals, lifestyle, and the specific health issues you're addressing. Regular practice, both in-session and at home, will likely lead to the best outcomes.
